Awareness is not the only gap

Almost every Australian already knows scams exist. That knowledge did not stop last year’s losses, because modern scams do not arrive with obvious red flags. They arrive as a text from your bank, an invoice from your builder, or a message from your daughter. The real gap is time: the hours or days between money leaving an account and somebody noticing it has gone.

Knowing is not the same as being protected

No one’s just a number

Four of the 274,577

These Australians shared their stories through the National Anti-Scam Centre so that others might recognise what happened to them. Not careless people. Not unusual people. Just people, at the moment a scam found them.

Phishing text scam

An alert about a laptop she never bought. A phone call that sounded like PayPal. One code, shared while she was panicking, and Lindy was in debt.

Payment redirection scam

Mannu was paying a $20,000 deposit to his builder. The payment link was not from his builder, and the money was gone the moment he used it.

Romance scam

Weeks of messages from a man whose profile looked real. Then an emergency, a request for $5,000, and a block the following day.

Impersonation scam

Messages that read exactly like her daughter, each more urgent than the last. Just under $26,000 had moved before Susanne picked up the phone.
